Dow Jones Architects was formed in 1997 when Biba Dow left Powell & Moya Architects to work on the commission for the Marshall House in Sudbourne Suffolk. She was joined in 2000 by Alun Jones, who had just completed the New Art Gallery, Walsall as project architect for Caruso St John. Our core interest is in construction, and the relationship between form and matter. Construction is essentially the means by which architectural ambition is realised, and as such is the upper horizon of the art of architecture. It is through materiality and its considered treatment that space, form and light are revealed. We are interested in a way of building that is direct and unpretentious, and respects the essence of the materials it uses. We pursue an approach that is at once practical and conceptual, to build things which are elevated through intent. We are interested in an idea of generosity that pertains to architecture, not through excess but through an openness to situations that accommodate every day life.
