Architecture, it’s theories and ideas, seem currently to be dominated by scientific methodology and abstraction. Although this may be seen as problematic, it does provide us with a framework for examination of form and structure and a way of explaining our thoughts in a powerful and comprehensive way. What are more difficult to address with these systems are the specifics of place, time and culture: the context in which we produce our work. However, it is these concerns that permit the development of genuinely resonant architecture. Whilst our position in the 21st century and the collective understanding of our condition calls for clear, coherent buildings; easily comprehended at a primary level, it does not exclude rich and engaging architecture capable of being read on a number of levels. The value of paper architecture is unquestioned. However, we believe architectures’ primary manifestation to be in the built form, whose essence must surely be habitation. This relies upon notions of existence and community to create the potential for a meaningful dialogue between individual and environment.
