Finding an Architect

If you're planning to have any kind of large project done on your home, or indeed maybe planning to build a home from scratch you will definitely be looking into finding an architect. One of the most common questions we get asked is "can you recommend an architect?" followed closely by "how do we go about finding an architect for...?"

Finding an architect can be a stressful experience, especially if like most people you don't have a background in design. One of the most useful things you can do is get a basic understanding of the vocabulary that architects use. Knowing the basics, such as what working drawings are will be invaluable as the project progresses.

You should also make sure that you pick an architect that is suited to the project you are undertaking, it's no point going to a large established firm with a 'good name' if they specialise in large scale industrial or commercial projects and you just want some help with a loft conversion. In this instance a small local architect you can give you the time you need for a reasonable fee would be a much better choice.

Something else you should be aware of is that you need to stick to your guns and make sure the architect does what you want them to. Although of course you will have to rely on their expertise many architects are keen to try out new techniques and innovations and quite happy to let you (and your wallet) be the guinea pig for the next big untested thing.
